Countries all across the globe are putting a lot of emphasis on sustainability. There is a growing focus on sustainable production and consumption to protect the environment. Being the 12th SDG (sustainable development goal) of the UN (United Nations), sustainable production and consumption practices are being implemented in various sectors such as construction, food production, and even tourism. Another product where sustainability is making inroads, though at a modest level, is sanitary pads. Sanitary pads are used by millions of people worldwide. As per Statista Research Department, in the United States of America, over 56 million women have used sanitary pads in 2023.

In India, the most populated country, around 121 million women and girls use 8 disposable and non-biodegradable pads on an average every month, a World Bank report says. The report also says that an average woman produces around 150 kilograms of non-compostable waste globally every year through their use of sanitary pads. Hence, considering this an issue, some brands produce sustainable sanitary pads for women and girls. Saathi is one such brand that has been making eco-friendly and compostable sanitary pads for women and girls since 2015. Kristin Kagetsu, one of Saathi’s co-founders, is promoting sustainable sanitary pads globally. UNESCO has recognised Saathi’s efforts to address the issue of sanitary waste.

In conclusion, embracing sustainable sanitary pads is not just a personal choice but a significant step towards global sustainability, with far-reaching impacts on our planet.
